This time last year Australian cricketer Phil Hughes tragically passed when he was struck by a ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Australian rapper Urthboy has suitably marked the sombre occasion with a touching tribute.
“I was driving past the SCG the night his team mates mourned his passing, and those big bright lights felt so haunting,” Urthboy wrote on his Facebook, alongside the track titled Nambucca Boy.
“I went home and wrote this as a way of understanding the grief I felt at Phil Hughes’ death. I hope you get something out of it.”
The track is bound by a minimal piano beat with plenty of room left for the rapper to lay down touching lyrics.
“He was brought up Nambucca River way, Town of Macksville, young kid begins to play,” he raps on the track which acts as a sort-of biography of Hughes’ short but brilliant life.
Urthboy never met Hughes but the song encapsulates many of the feelings the entire country felt on the day that he tragically lost his life. Urthboy has aptly dedicated the song to Hughes’ family.
